War in Ukraine: a statement by the Faculty Board of Archaeology
The Faculty Board of Archaeology is shocked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and our thoughts go out to all those affected by this act of aggression.
We wish to express our solidarity with students and staff in and from Ukraine, and we embrace those in the academic communities in Russia who are speaking out against the invasion while courageously continuing to dedicate themselves to peace, dialogue and open cooperation.
The fertile black soils of Ukraine bear witness to tens of millennia of rich and diverse human history. The Russian invasion has already led to the destruction of significant historical buildings, artwork, and memorials. We are deeply concerned about the ramifications for Ukrainian heritage and the academic community.
We understand that this is a difficult time for our students and staff, especially for those with ties in the region. We can imagine that this may have an effect on your studies or work. Therefore, we encourage students to consult their student advisor if needed. Employees we ask to engage in conversation with colleagues or supervisors if they feel the need. So do you have questions, concerns or run into problems? Then contact your supervisor or study advisor.
You can also call the emergency number +31 71 527 1132 (available Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm) or send an e-mail to crisis@leidenuniv.nl.
Do you want to financially support students and staff? The Leiden University Fund has opened a new donation point for an emergency fund for Ukrainian and Russian students. Also see the Leiden University Dossier on Ukraine, with activities, news, and updates.
