As a PhD candidate, you communicate with your supervisor(s), colleagues, research assistants and students. Sometimes communication is easy and everyone feels heard and understood, in other occasions communication is harder because you do not know how to say something, or you want to say things that the other party may not like. In this workshop you will learn how to give and receive feedback in a constructive way.

For PhD candidates of Leiden University and LUMC. In order to register for this course you will need to obtain permission of your employer.

What you'll learn

During this workshop you will get tips and advice on how to communicate in such a way that you can say the things you want to say in a respectful, friendly and effective manner. We will specifically deal with how to give and receive feedback, keeping in mind different cultural backgrounds and how this can play a role. Furthermore, we will look at how an inclusive organizational culture helps in creating safety and trust, thereby facilitating the manner in which we dare to provide feedback.

Format

The workshop will be a combination of individual and group exercises, group discussions, and short theoretical explanations.

Workload

The workload amounts to 4 hours, including attendance and preparation.
