Making sense of the world around us depends on the fundamental ability to parse the world into distinct objects and keep track of them. This process is defined as object individuation. Research indicates that it is not always easy for infants.

What are the developmental pathways to social anxiety (disorder), the causal processes and maintaining factors? How do these factors interact in the development of social anxiety disorder? How can this knowledge be used to design and implement effective preventive intervention programs for youth?

What are the circadian disturbances underlying depression vulnerability? How are they related to mood, cognition and sleep ?

The programme group Educational Sciences is one of the six programme groups within the Institute of Child and Education Studies at Leiden University.

The research master's specialisation Developmental Psychology consists of five main parts: the general courses, the track-specific courses, the elective courses, a research internship and a thesis.

The main focus of our research programme is on adolescence, a key transitional period in human development. The programme puts emphasis on combined experimental behavioural and neural analysis of normative transitions and deviations in adolescent development.

The Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC) is concentrating increasingly on research into the role of the brain in language development. The institute has now set up the LIBC Language website that brings together all the information on this research.

What is the relation between brain development and social and cognitive development across childhood, adolescence and adulthood?

This PhD project investigates what the universal and variable morphosyntactic properties of linguistic expressions of otherness are and how they can be modelled theoretically.
