Want to do a PhD? Apply for an NWO grant

16 October 2018

The NWO PhD grant programme ‘PhD Graduations in the Humanities’ is open for 2019. The official call will be published by NWO in December. The 2018 link is informative since procedures most probably will not be altered. However, make sure to check the guidelines as soon as the call 2019 is online.

Procedure and deadlines

There are two selection rounds:

  1. At the Faculty by the Research Committee (December 2018).

Professors are applicants in this PhD grant program. Each professor may submit a maximum of two proposals to the Research Committee, and is therefore asked to select the two best (most promising) proposals and submit these to the Faculty of Archaeology Research Committee. Deadline: December 4, 11.59 a.m.

The Research Committee will assess the proposals according to N.W.O criteria, and rank the ‘top three’. Archaeology will submit the top three proposals to the next selection round by the Science Committee Humanities & Archaeology.
  2. The Science Committee of the Faculties Humanities & Archaeology will select the ‘top five’ from the Archaeology and Humanities proposals (January 2019). Only the five proposals selected in this 2nd round can be submitted to NWO. The Faculty of Archaeology will match one Faculty of Archaeology proposal.

Deadline for the first selection round by the Faculty of Archaeology Research Committee: December 4, 11.59 a.m.

Submit your proposal to r.manning@arch.leidenuniv.nl. The Research Committee will assess only proposals that are conform NWO- guidelines. Applications should consist of:

  • a full proposal in NWO-format and CV in English (filling in the budget, is not yet needed). Note that there is a NWO-format for the CV as well.
  • email (Dutch or English) of supervisor (‘promotor’) declaring willingness as supervisor for candidate & project.

Deadline submission of proposal to Committee Humanities & Archaeology: January 14, 2019.
