Vegetarian catering during Healthy University Week

Eating less meat is not only good for the environment, but also for your own health! During Healthy University Week from 28th October until 1st November you can only eat a vegetarian meal in the restaurants of the university.

You will read on signs next to some meals why the vegetarian option is healthier than a meal with meat. You will also see some information about nutritional value and allergens on new product price tags.

Better for the environment

Less meat is better for the environment. Our food is responsible for 20 to 35 percent of the emissions of all greenhouse gases. More than half of that comes from meat and dairy. By eating less than 100 gram meat a week, you will lower the greenhouse gases of your food by 7 to 10 percent.

Better for your health

Meat has useful nutrients such as protein, B vitamins and iron. It can therefore contribute to a healthy and varied diet. But when you eat too much meat, it is bad for your health. Certainly if you have a lot of processed meat (hamburger, sausage and marinated meat, cold cuts) and red meat (from beef, pork, sheep and goat) on your plate.

Processed meat and red meat ensure a higher risk of a stroke, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and lung cancer. This is partly because processed meat usually contains a lot of saturated fat and salt. Reduce the risk of various diseases and replace meat with legumes, nuts or egg.

Get into action during the Healthy University Week

There will be various workshops and clinics during the Healthy University Week from 28th October until 1st November. You will get personal advice about how you manage a healthy lifestyle.
