Ethics and Data Committee in times of COVID-19

18 May 2020

Now that two months have passed since the start of the lockdown, it is clear that the number of research applications and questions for the Ethics and Data Committee has dropped considerably. This is understandable in view of all the extra obligations related to teaching and therefore less attention for research. Nonetheless, we would like to point out that even in these unusual times requirements related to ethics and privacy for research remain just as important, and the Committee’s activities continue as usual. So if, as a faculty staff member, you have any questions or you would like to submit a research plan for advice, please don’t hesitate to contact us about this (via email: ethiekendatacie@law.leidenuniv.nl).

The members of the Ethics and Data Committee are Pierre Koning (chairman), Erik de Vries (secretary), Thomas van Beek, Miranda Sentse and Carsten Stahn. The Committee’s main task is to review research proposals submitted by employees on criteria concerning ethically responsible scientific conduct. In addition, the  Committee looks at questions related to the management of (sensitive) data and GDPR legislation. An ethical review may be relevant in matters concerning privacy of research subjects, aspects of human dignity when holding interviews, acquisition of mutual consent and possible conflicts of interests in the case of third flow money i.e. contract research.

The next meeting of the Ethics and Data Committee is scheduled for Wednesday 8 July 2020. The deadline to submit a research proposal is Wednesday 24 June 2020.

If you require more information, the Committee’s regulations and the form to request advice are available on our website.
