Finish BA during MA due to corona: 1 month or 1 year extra time
We would like to inform you about the measures chosen by the University and Faculty to mitigate the “bachelor’s before master’s” (harde knip) rule. These measures have been made possible by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. They represent a way for us to accommodate students who have incurred a study delay as a result of the corona crisis. The measures have now been announced on the website and communicated to current and prospective students, programme chairs and study coordinators. Ideally, we would have preferred to share this information with the organisation at an earlier stage, but unfortunately there was just too little time.
Third-year bachelor’s students who want to start a master’s programme and who have incurred a study delay as a result of the corona crisis will be offered an extension allowing them to complete their bachelor’s programme in the coming academic year. They may start their master’s programme on 1 September by applying in the proper way and under certain conditions.
For 16 of the master’s programmes at our Faculty, an extension to 1 September 2021 will be possible, provided 165 ECs from the bachelor’s programme have already been obtained. For the remaining 13 master’s programmes (selective (Research) MAs and masters with a limited intake), an extension of one month will apply. In the context of this measure, the deadline for programme components where students have incurred a delay is Monday 28 September.
These measures apply for BA students at Dutch universities and for EEA students.
This measure applies to the following master's programmes/ tracks: One month to still complete the bachelor’s. Students have to submit assignments and a final paper by Monday 28 September 2020 at the latest.

This measure applies to the following master's programmes/ tracks: One year to complete the bachelor’s, by 31 August 2021 at the latest. Additional requirement: if the BA final paper is part of the 15 ECs of BA subjects that have not yet been obtained, the final paper must be completed before the student starts to write the MA thesis. This condition will be included in the Teaching and Examination Regulations.
- MA African Studies
- MA Arts and Culture
- MA Asian Studies (60 EC)
- MA Classics and Ancient Civilizations
- MA History (excl. Europaeum Programme)

The measures for mitigating the “bachelor’s before master’s” rule also apply to pre-master’s students: they may start their master’s while still having 15 ECs of pending bachelor’s subjects. If the BA final paper is part of the pre-master’s, this assignment must be completed in the current academic year. In other words, the final paper for pre-master’s students does not form part of the 15-EC extension measure.
All the pages on the recruitment website that contain admission information have been updated and the relevant measures have been added.
Together with you, we will look as quickly as possible at how we can implement the new measures as effectively as possible.
