Going back to the office? Schedule time for software updates on your work laptop

30 July 2020

Going back to the office after several months of working from home with your Windows work laptop? Then you’ll need to update your work laptop with the latest software versions. It can take up to half a day to install these updates. Afterwards, your laptop will work as usual again.

You have a Windows work laptop. What can you do to save time?

At home, check to see if you have installed the latest software updates. You can find instructions on how to do this on the helpdesk portal. This will save time when you reconnect to the university network.

Possibly an extra update at the office

Once you are at the office and you connect your work laptop to the university network via Wi-Fi (NUWD laptop) or a network cable, it will automatically check for updates. Your laptop may then install a new version of Windows 10. Keep in mind that, should that be the case, you won’t be able to use your work laptop for a few hours.

Don’t forget to save the files you created or edited while working from home on your P drive, J drive, SURFdrive or OneDrive. Also, don’t forget your adapter. Your laptop must not power down while the updates are being installed.

If you have a Mac work laptop, make sure you update your laptop every month at home. You can find instructions on how to do this on the helpdesk portal. Then when you go back to the office you won’t lose any time installing updates.
