Job Description

Covid-19 has changed the academic world drastically and that is why we are committed to offer extra support for our incoming students. LUC The Hague is looking for enthusiastic and committed student mentors to help the Class of 2023 settle into academic life at LUC.  

As a student mentor you will supervise two groups of 20  LUC students. You will act as a role model and a first point of contact for questions related to academics for the members of your groups; you could think of questions about online learning, introducing students to the facilities of LUC and Leiden University, the library, Usis, but also study related questions, how to manage studying, exams, educational culture, study related choices to be made, and student life.

As group and with support with an academic advisor, you will organise an online and offline programme focused on introducing students to Leiden University and LUC, building their study skills, and improving the academic wellbeing of the students. The Academic Advisor will join various meetings in the programme.

Profile of a Student Mentor

  • Graduate of LUC (classes of 2019 or 2020), registered as a student at Leiden University, or third year student LUC.
  • Has a motivated and enthusiastic with a positive outlook;
  • Possesses good communication skills in English;
  • Has great organisational skills, online and offline;
  • Shows empathy and is helpful;
  • Values inclusiveness and diversity;
  • Preferably has experience in guiding groups (e.g. teaching or training);
  • Is available between 1 September 2020 and 1 February 2021, for 4 - 6 hours a week;
  • Due to the time constraints of this project and its start date, as well as the lengthy procedure for work permits, unfortunately this position is only open to students who currently have a valid work permit, or are legally able to work in The Netherlands. ;

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Organising and planning of the mentor group meetings;
  • Preparing and chairing the mentor group meetings;
  • Motivating your mentor groups;
  • Answering practical questions relating to academics from the group members;
  • Supporting your mentor groups when connecting to the study programme and faculty;
  • Providing support to the academic advisor at the meetings where (s)he is present;
  • Point of contact for the students in your groups, if needed, refer them to the appropriate support, department or procedure.
