Dutch Research Council makes funds available for researchers hard hit by coronavirus

1 February 2021

The coronavirus pandemic continues to rage, and this could seriously delay people’s research. This is particularly problematic for PhD candidates and postdocs with a fixed-term contract. Some may not be able to complete their research within the duration of their contract.

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has now made funds that the University and the LUMC will use this to help researchers who have been particularlly hard hit by extending their contract for up to three months.

The University and the LUMC will consider PhD candidates (with a funded place) and postdocs who, due to the coronavirus pandemic, will no longer be possible to complete their research within the duration of their contract.

Last year Leiden made 1.1m euros available for contract extensions, and this was used to help 84 PhD candidates and postdocs.

More information on the new support package for PhD candidates and postdocs will follow soon.
