New rules for business trips abroad

31 May 2021

Business trips abroad are allowed under certain conditions after 1 June. The Executive Board decided on this on 11 May. Staff who wishes to make a trip abroad should first request permission. Submit your application at least 8 weeks in advance. The necessity of these trips and the need to make them at this particular time will be carefully assessed. The new procedure applies to all business trips abroad that are made from 1 June.

Travel to an orange or red zone

Do you need to travel to an orange or red zone for work? In that case, the application must be supported by your faculty board/Expertise Center director. You also need prior permission from the Executive Board and additional conditions (i.e. risk analysis and/or safety training) are set.

Returning or arriving from abroad

Leiden University staff who are returning from a country with an orange or red colour code in a Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisory – which also specifies that you should quarantine for ten days – are not allowed to visit the university during this period, regardless whether they have symptoms.  University policy is therefore stricter than government policy. With a corona test on day 5 you can shorten the duration of staying at home.

Also, always consult the checklist for travel to the Netherlands, on the Dutch government website. The rules that apply to travellers entering the Netherlands may differ based on which country you are travelling from.

Leiden astronomers calculated that their online conference EAS 2020 consumed three thousand times less carbon dioxide than the face-to-face edition a year earlier.

The past period has shown us how many possibilities the digital world offers us. Ask yourself whether it is really necessary to go on a business trip, or whether comparable results can also be achieved via digital meetings.
