Make a difference for young scientific talent with your moment in the spotlight
Is it your birthday or are you retiring? You may want to take the opportunity to ask for a charitable donation rather than a gift for yourself. Jaap van den Herik, emeritus professor of Law and Computer Science, chose to do just that and he picked Leiden University Fund (LUF) as the beneficiary.
Professor Van den Herik asked for a contribution to the Leiden Empowerment Fund (LEF) as a parting gift. The LEF was established from the desire to contribute to the creation of an academic environment with equal opportunities for everyone. An environment in which every talent feels at home. Professor Van den Herik is happy to contribute to creating this environment. His online page soon filled with beautiful messages from colleagues, students, family and friends. A selection:
‘Cousin Jaap, a lasting source of inspiration, also in his choice for charities.’
‘If Jaap supports this cause, it must be a very good cause, which I wholeheartedly support.’
‘I feel privileged to have been able to experience Jaap for so many years. We say goodbye to an incredibly committed and productive professor, with unbridled energy, a true networker, always full of ideas.'
Do you also not know what to ask for your birthday or when you leave the university? Then consider requesting a contribution for the LUF via a special personal page on SteunLeiden.nl. As mentioned above, this can be done for a specific named fund, but also for young scientific talent in general. A target amount, like on professors Van den Herik's page, is optional. About the LUF
In dozens of study rooms, libraries and laboratories, passionate scientists – with the support of the donors of the Leiden University Fund (LUF) – are working on a fundamental understanding of the world and the people around us. They make the unknown known and push the boundaries of existing fields of science. With a donation to the LUF you not only contribute to groundbreaking research, but you also support the scientists of the future. With various grants, the LUF contributes to a lively study climate where every student, in Leiden and The Hague, can develop optimally.
