Cybersecurity: using mobile devices

22 February 2022

Mobile devices have become an integral part of our daily and working lives. For instance, 95.7% of the Dutch population has a smartphone, which is used for both work and private purposes. There are risks associated with this. Below are some tips on how to make your smartphone (and laptop) safer.

Tips for safe smartphone and laptop use

  • Use separate devices for work and private use;
  • Choose strong passwords;
  • Use fingerprint or facial recognition to log in to your smartphone;
  • Never leave your device unattended;
  • Lock your smartphone/laptop when you are not using it;
  • Do not use Gmail or Hotmail, for example, to exchange company information;
  • Always install security updates and antivirus and anti-malware software;
  • Use a VPN connection, such as eduVPN;
  • Treat your smartphone just like your laptop; antivirus and anti-malware software and VPN are extremely important for your smartphone;
  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if possible;
  • If your smartphone or laptop is missing or stolen, change your passwords immediately and notify the ISSC helpdesk.
