Universities of the Netherlands and employee organisations reach preliminary negotiation settlement

16 May 2022

On 12 May, Universities of the Netherlands reached a preliminary negotiation settlement with the employee organisations about the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) 2022. This includes agreements on a structural salary increase, a one-off payment, career perspectives for lecturers and parental leave. The parties to the CAO will present the negotiation settlement to their members and aim to reach a final CAO agreement by 9 June.

Structural salary increase and one-off payment

The parties to the CAO agree that on 1 July 2022 the salaries of university employees will be increased by 4%. In addition, they will receive a one-off pro-rata payment of €400 before tax. For employees who receive the minimum hourly wage for the university sector, this amounts to €750, under the same conditions.

Study on career prospects for lecturers

In September 2022, the universities and employee organisations will begin a joint study to determine how to improve the contractual position of lecturers during the next collective agreement period. In particular, the study will look at the possibility of offering more permanent contracts. The results of this study will form the basis of the next CAO.
Improved parental leave
As of 1 August 2022, the parental leave scheme will be improved. Salary paid during parental leave will increase to 70%, for example, staff will no longer have to have been employed for at least one year to be entitled to parental leave and the repayment scheme will be scrapped.

Duration

The CAO runs from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023. The parties to the collective agreement will present the negotiation settlement to their members and aim to reach a final agreement by 9 June.
