Fire at LBSP: University hopes to have all buildings open again on Wednesday 24 May

23 May 2023

Leiden University is optimistic about the chances that all its buildings at Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) will once again be connected to the grid on Wednesday 24 May and that students and staff will be able to come in. Every effort will be made throughout the evening and night to connect the power so that the buildings can reopen for research and teaching.

As a result of a cable fire in a medium-voltage substation by the Gorlaeus building on the morning of Tuesday 23 May, a number of university buildings at the Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) were left without power. Since it was not safe to carry on working and studying without power, these buildings were evacuated on Tuesday and students and staff were sent home. This was an unfortunate situation for everyone working or studying there.

We have been looking today at how to connect all the affected buildings to the power grid as soon as possible. The aim is to restore power to these buildings in phases during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. We hope that this will succeed and that all buildings will be open as normal to students and staff from Wednesday.

However, we would like to ask everyone to carefully check the additional information from their own faculty, degree programme or unit before leaving tomorrow morning. Students will also be informed by their own faculty or degree programme about exams scheduled for Wednesday in the University Sports Centre (USC).
