Stabbing at Albert Heijn - Turfmarkt in The Hague

20 June 2023

On Tuesday morning just after 7.00, a stabbing took place at the Albert Heijn on the Turfmarkt in The Hague. The police has confirmed that one person was killed in the incident. Soon afterwards, a suspect was arrested nearby. A police officer was also slightly injured during the stabbing.

The Turfmarkt has been cordoned off and black screens have been placed near the supermarket. Parts of the store building have also been cordoned off with ribbons. On the Schedeldoekshaven, near the Turfmarkt, a section has also been cordoned off with black screens. The police are currently investigating at the scene. A forensic team has been deployed and an emergency unit has been stationed at the Turfmarkt. Mayor Van Zanen also came to pay a visit to the Turfmarkt. Employees of the Albert Heijn supermarket are temporarily being accommodated at Wijnhaven.

No employees or students of Leiden University were involved in the incident. Wijnhaven and Beehive are open and accessible to staff and students. We sympathize with our neighbors and wish them much strength. Did you witness the incident or feel the need to talk about it? If so, please contact your supervisor or the Student Advisor.
