Survey of mental health of academic staff: take the Academy Thermometer

14 December 2023

What motivates academics and, conversely, what takes too much of their energy? The new Academy Thermometer survey will give some insight into what is going well in Dutch academia and what could be improved.

The survey is the initiative of The Young Academy, a platform for young researchers set up by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Anyone teaching and/or conducting research at a university can take the Academy Thermometer. The questions cover job satisfaction and working conditions as well as workload, dignity and respect and any mental health problems. It also looks at the influence of factors such as academic position and having caring responsibilities.

How to participate

If you are an academic at Leiden University and would you like to take the survey, you can fill in the questionnaire here (in English). It will take about 15 minutes to complete. All results are anonymised and cannot be traced back to a specific university. The study will run until the end of February and the results are expected in the second half of 2024.
