KOG employees: book a slot for your laptop’s migration to Windows 11!

6 May 2024

Microsoft is going to end support for Windows 10. As a result, Leiden University will switch to Windows 11 as the standard operating system for all staff-managed Windows workstations. Between 13 May and 20 June 2024, a team from the ISSC will be based at the Kamerlingh Onnes Building to install the operating system on all devices (desktops and laptops), except for workstations that use VeraCrypt.

Desktop or laptop
If you work on a desktop, agreements will be made with your Head of Department or Institute Coordinator. If you have a laptop, you need to make an appointment for the migration by clicking the link provided below.

Book a time slot
You can hand over your laptop in room A0.09 at the KOG Building on any working day between 13 May and 20 June. You need to book a time slot for your laptop’s migration in advance using this form.

What to expect

  1. Your laptop’s migration will probably take around two hours, though this may vary per device.
  2. Once the operating system has been installed, you will receive a phone call asking you to come and log in and go through the final steps with a member of the ISSC team.
  3. You will also receive instructions on how to use Windows 11.

NB: you will not be able to use your laptop during the migration, although you will be able to log in and work on other computers.

Prepare for the migration
Below is a checklist of things you need to do before your laptop’s migration in order to save time on the day.

  • Book a time slot for the migration as soon as possible so that you get a convenient time slot. Please bear in mind that the migration may take up to 2½ hours, and you won’t be able to use your laptop during this time.
  • Transfer the entire contents of your P: drive to OneDrive as soon as possible if you have not already done this. For support with this, please read the information on OneDrive in the helpdesk portal (OneDrive: Frequently Asked Questions) or ask the helpdesk through the helpdesk portal.

  • If you’re a researcher and you have research data stored on your P: drive, make sure you save it in a workgroup on the J: drive. You can request a workgroup if necessary. If you use VeraCrypt, your laptop will be upgraded at a later date. The same applies if you use CBS-FortiClient.
  • Make sure you upload your local data and the data on your P: drive to your personal OneDrive so that everything is securely stored in the cloud (see OneDrive: uploading files and folders). Local data includes:
    • web browser bookmarks (Edge bookmarks are automatically retained, while Chrome bookmarks will be restored once you log in with your Google account);
    • your email signature and any files in your Downloads folder or on your desktop (you can either save your current email signature in a Word document or create a new signature after the migration using the university’s email signature maker)
    • any data from special software that is stored locally (contact the helpdesk if you’re unsure about this).

Questions
For more information about Windows 11, please read the information provided by the helpdesk portal: From Windows 10 to Windows 11.

A dedicated project team is here to help with the installation of Windows 11. During the migration of the desktops, this team will also be on hand to answer any questions and check that everything is working properly. If you have any questions about the above information, send an email to Windows11@ISSC.leidenuniv.nl.
