Going cashless: payments now by bank transfer

12 August 2025

Since August, Leiden University has been almost entirely cashless. This not only reduces admin and security risks but also makes things easier for recipients. Payments to volunteers, research participants and bursary recipients are now faster, more transparent and made through a reliable bank transfer.

What has changed?

  • Cash is no longer used at the university, except for existing requests
  • Payments (e.g. for volunteers or research participants) are now digital
  • Petty cash desks throughout the university are being phased out
  • VVV gift cards will remain in use for now
  • Bursaries for international students and staff will  be paid directly into their own bank accounts
  • A WISE account is available in exceptional cases (see Dutch bank account)

What are the benefits?

  • Faster, more user-friendly payments to recipients
  • Easier for recipients (many places in the Netherlands no longer accept cash)
  • Less paperwork and admin
  • More future-proof financial administration
