Looking for the right words: working together on suicide prevention among students
From 8 to 14 September is World Suicide Prevention Week organised by the 113 Suicide Prevention Foundation. The theme this year is ‘Looking for the right words’. By offering a listening ear and talking, you can refer students with suicidal thoughts to the right help. Whether you work with students on a daily basis or only speak to them now and again, together we can make the difference and play our part in creating a caring and safe university.
''You don’t have to be a doctor or psychologist to talk openly about suicide'' - colleague Jelle Buijs who attended a 113 training
What can you do?
You can follow one of the activities during the campaign week, organised by 113 Suicide Prevention Foundation, which make suicide a topic that can be discussed.
If you would like to get started straight away, you can follow a training course given by experts from the 113 Suicide Prevention Foundation online or at the university. You will learn:
- To recognise signs of depression and suicidal thoughts;
- How to start a discussion about this in a respectful way;
- Where you can go for professional follow-up support.
