Unions and WoinActie take action against cuts

25 November 2025

WoinActie and the AOB, FNV and LSVB unions are calling on students and staff from universities across the Netherlands to strike on 9 December and to gather at Dam Square in Amsterdam. They are taking action against the cuts.

The Executive Board and deans understand the action and support the call to strike. They want to ensure that essential activities such as exams, PhD ceremonies and inaugural lectures go ahead as planned that day.

Inform your manager and students

University staff are free to strike on 9 June, but we want to do all we can to ensure that students do not miss compulsory exams or practicals. If you decide to strike, please inform your manager, and make sure to inform your students in Brightspace.

Compulsory practicals and exams

Students who wish to join their lecturers in the strike on 9 December are not required to attend classes, except for compulsory practicals and exams that cannot be rescheduled. They are responsible for catching up on missed work. Missing compulsory classes may mean having to catch up next academic year.

Strike programme

For the latest information about the strike, please see the organisers’ websites. You will find these on the event page.

Transport

If you want to travel to Amstedam by public transport, you may use your Shuttel card. It is also possible to register for a special bus from Leiden to Dam Square in Amsterdam on December 9 (arrival at 12:00), for both staff and students. You do not need to be a union member. The bus will depart if at least 100 participants register. You can sign up until 1 December 2025 at the latest.
