Microsoft sensitivity labels no longer displayed in footers from 25 February

23 February 2026

As of 25 February, you will no longer see the ‘Classified as Internal | Intern’ sensitivity label in documents in the Microsoft 365 environment. The label will still be active, but it will no longer be displayed at the bottom of your documents.

This change has been made following complaints about the label’s visibility when printing documents, for example. Although it will no longer be shown in the footer, the label will continue to be applied automatically to documents and emails, and it will remain embedded in the metadata. You will still be able to view this information in a document’s properties. The existing rules for using and sharing these documents remain unchanged.

Why do we use sensitivity labels?

The university introduced sensitivity labels in Microsoft 365 last May to help ensure that information is classified securely and consistently. These labels make it clear which emails and documents are for internal use, and which ones can be shared more widely.

The labels are a handy tool in helping understand what may be shared with whom, reducing the risk of information being shared with the wrong audience.
