Launch of the Faculty of Archaeology’s new DEAI Work Plan (2026–2028)
The Faculty of Archaeology is pleased to present its new Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) Work Plan for the period 2026–2028. This plan was developed by the DEAI Committee building on the foundations laid in the previous faculty Diversity and Inclusion Work Plan and aligning with Leiden University’s strategic commitment to DEAI as core principles of academic excellence and social responsibility.
Commitment
Leiden University’s 2022–2027 Strategic Plan emphasises the importance of fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. In line with these values, the Faculty of Archaeology aims to provide an environment in which all students and staff feel safe, respected, and empowered to thrive. Recent initiatives such as the introduction of gender‑neutral restrooms, the funding of small‑scale projects that diversify archaeological practice (DARCH), and the ongoing culture‑change trajectory toward a healthier and safer work environment, reflect this commitment.
Efforts
Sarah Schrader, chair of the Faculty’s DEAI Committee notes: ‘Our efforts focus on five broad areas: (1) enhancing mentorship, inclusivity, and safety; (2) promoting inclusive education and representation; (3) fostering a safe working environment; (4) supporting ethical and inclusive research practices; and (5) ensuring an accessible and inclusive learning and working environment.’
Feedback
‘Ultimately, our goal is to help make our faculty, university, and wider community a more diverse, inclusive, and safe space for everyone,’ Schrader adds. ‘We welcome questions, feedback, and suggestions from students, staff, and faculty—please feel free to contact a member of the DEAI committee directly, or drop a note in the DEAI suggestion box (located at the advertisement board near the front of the Van Steenis building).’
