Staff mobility: new skills, new insights

19 March 2026

As a staff member at our faculty, you can develop your expertise further not only here, but also at a university outside the Netherlands. Through staff mobility, also called staff exchange, you can teach abroad temporarily, follow training courses, shadow colleagues (job shadowing), or gain experience and exchange knowledge on certain themes (benchmarking).

Stay and funding

Depending on the programme, a stay can range from two days to a full semester. The funding can come from the faculty, a partner organisation, projects or special incentive grants, or a specific SAP fund.

Why participate in staff mobility?

A temporary stay at a partner university offers opportunities for professional growth and acquiring new inspiration. It will introduce you to other working methods, sharpen your (didactic) skills or put you in contact with colleagues working in similar areas. Many participants find that they return to their own job with renewed energy and new ideas. This applies to academic staff as well as non-academic staff. In addition, staff mobility can help improve quality at our own faculty: new insights, best practices and international perspectives find their way into our teaching and education.

Special opportunities: Universitas Indonesia, Melbourne Law School, UC Law San Francisco

Several of our partner universities currently offer interesting opportunities for staff mobility. While teaching is the main purpose of these exchanges, staff mobility also offers an excellent opportunity to gain new perspectives on education, exchange ideas with international colleagues, build sustainable partnerships, and bring fresh inspiration back to your own courses and research.

31 March 2026 is the deadline for applying for an exchange to Universitas Indonesia in Indonesia. This programme offers opportunities to visit the partner institution and further develop academic collaboration.

Our partner University of Melbourne (Australia) has opened a call in which staff members can submit an 'expression of interest' for a mobility visit. The deadline for applying is 24 April 2026.

Finally, the deadline for our long-standing staff exchange with UC Law San Francisco is approaching. Our faculty has enjoyed a valuable collaboration with UC Law San Francisco since the early 1990s. Over the years, many of our colleagues have taught courses there, while we welcome a UC Law lecturer in Leiden every spring. The exchange focuses on teaching courses, either in the form of a 7-week condensed course or a full semester in the spring. Travel costs, visa, accommodation and a small daily allowance to contribute to living expenses are covered. The application deadline is 1 May 2026. Colleagues interested in applying can contact Anette van Sandwijk for more information.
