Expand your teaching: Leiden Law School’s new collaborative module with Universidad Diego Portales
Leiden Law School is launching a new Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) partnership with Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) in Chile. This initiative connects students and staff from both institutions to explore critical issues related to securitisation, borders and human mobility.
The online COIL module links two existing courses: ‘Human Realities of Securitisation’, taught by UDP’s Constanza Jorquera, and ‘Border Criminologies: the Criminalisation of Mobility’, led by Leiden’s Amalia Campos-Delgado. Together, students from Chile and the Netherlands will engage in collaborative discussions, joint assignments and comparative analyses. They will examine how border security policies shape political and social identities, as well as conflicts at local, national and global levels. This virtual exchange encourages critical reflection on citizenship, rights and mobility, while fostering intercultural understanding and empathy.
Teaching opportunities
For staff, this partnership offers practical opportunities to enhance teaching, research and student engagement. The COIL module is designed to fit seamlessly into the existing curriculum, complementing current courses without adding extra workload. Students participate in the virtual exchange as part of their regular coursework, earning academic credit while gaining exposure to diverse academic and cultural perspectives. After completing the COIL module, students can apply for in-person exchanges at Leiden University or UDP, further deepening their academic and cultural experiences.
But why should staff get involved? Beyond the benefits for students, this collaboration strengthens institutional ties between Leiden Law School and UDP, creating opportunities for joint research, faculty exchanges and long-term academic cooperation. Staff who teach courses related to human rights, migration, criminology or international law are particularly encouraged to explore how a COIL component could enrich their curriculum. By participating, you will also have the chance to network with international colleagues, share best practices and contribute to the development of globally aware graduates.
How to get involved
How can you contribute? If you are interested in integrating COIL into your teaching or exploring research collaborations, reach out to Anoek van den Berg, Director of International Relations, or Amalia Campos-Delgado.
