Making diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion part of the Faculty's committees
The committees, council and board (‘gremia’) of the Faculty of Archaeology take decisions that affect what it is like to study and work at the faculty. The Faculty Board and the DEAI committee would like to invite every committee and council to make accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion a normal part of how those decisions are taken.
Important considerations
In practice it means asking questions of each proposal and decision before it is agreed. Questions such as, who would this affect? Who might it leave out? What about students or colleagues with a disability, a different background or certain obligations, and what can we adjust or include for them?
You might consider what the best mix of assignments or assessment methods is for all students, whether application criteria or a regulation unevenly or unfairly affect some, such as students with part-time employment or staff with care obligations, whether funding criteria favour certain careers, or whether vacancies reach a broad audience and early enough for international candidates to plan a move. Committees and councils can include a line in memos and minutes about these kinds of considerations.
To see what DEAI initiatives and resources can be helpful to the work of a faculty body, you can look through the DEAI resources and the Faculty's DEAI work plan.
Consider standing for a committee, council or board
Committees and councils work better by reflecting the whole Faculty. We strongly encourage everyone to consider standing for a faculty committee, council or board.
It's also helpful to have at least one member on each committee or council who has followed implicit bias or recruitment training, or similar.
The DEAI committee is keen to listen and advise, and we should share concerns and what works between committees.
