Experts in the media

Journalists often ask us which expert can say a few words about subjects that are frequently in the news.

A new star or planet has been discovered or a new cure for obesity has come on the market. Academics from the University are often asked to give their take on current developments in a radio or TV broadcast of a few minutes or in a newspaper article. Alternatively, journalists ask them to provide background information, to help them decide how and whether to approach a particular topic.

Cooperation important

The scientific communication adviser approaches staff who may be able to answer such questions. Many journalists also contact academics directly, because the contact details of all our staff appear on the website. Should you be approached but have little or no experience with the media, don’t feel overwhelmed. Take down the journalist’s question and discuss the matter with the scientific communication adviser before responding. She can provide tips and if necessary media training.

Image and support of the public

It is important for the University’s image that our staff cooperate with such requests for explanations and information. Appearing as an expert in the media also has a positive effect on public support for science.

Mention the University

Editors sometimes forget to state that the researcher in question works at Leiden University. Make sure you say beforehand that we appreciate a mention of the University.

If you are appearing in the media, please let the scientific communication adviser know. The broadcast or publication can then be announced on social media beforehand. Afterwards you can ask your faculty’s web team to write a news article for the website on the topic. See the examples in the news section ‘In the media’.

Can journalists find you?

Make sure that your profile page is complete so that journalists who are looking for an expert to comment on current affairs can find you. This means using the right keywords in Dutch and English, so that you can be found through the website and Google. You can also link related pages, such as news articles, agenda items, research projects, programme pages and dossiers.
