Scientific Conduct for PhDs (LUMC)

A number of cases of scientific fraud and misconduct were bad publicity for the scientific world. Are these cases signs of a system in crisis or just some anomalies in an otherwise good scientific framework? This course will focus on the grey areas in scientific integrity dilemmas and your role as an individual scientist to prevent misconduct.

Thank you for interest in the workshop “Scientific conduct” taught by the LUMC Graduate School. Below you can find some answers to most questions. If any other questions remain, please get in touch with the LUMC Graduate School office (graduateschool@lumc.nl)

The place of the workshop in the LUMC Graduate School curriculum

This workshop is part of the university mandatory wide program to make PhD candidates familiar with the different concepts related to scientific conduct and integrity. There are three pillars:

  1. Introduction of the topic during the university wide introduction day.
  2. A questionnaire about good research practices followed by an e-learning form the preparation for the workshop.
  3. Active participation in the workshop.

If you are reading this, we assume that you already attended the university wide introduction. If not, please register here

Ideally, you attend this workshop in the first 12-18 months of your PhD training. The Scientific conduct LUMC is obligatory for PhD candidates who started from September 2021 (started before Sept'21:  it's highly recommanded).

What happens during the workshop?

During the three-hour workshop, there are three interlocking parts:

  1. The instructor provides some (historic and scientific) context to the topic.
  2. We reflect on the code of conduct, specifically in relation to some historical cases and cultural differences – the preparatory assignment will be discussed here.
  3. A series of hypothetical dilemmas in subgroups.

What can you expect to have learned after the workshop?

At the end of the workshop the LUMC Graduate School PhD Student

  • Has knowledge of, and can reflect on, the code of conduct scientific integrity, especially the latest additions in the version of 2018.
  • Has knowledge of the LUMC code of research.
  • Can reduce complex cases of alleged scientific misconduct to its core while distinguishing between cases of scientific integrity, scientific misconduct and employee/employer conflict.
  • Can reflect on issues of scientific integrity with peers, especially the role of power dynamic that can be at play in mentor/mentee relationships.
  • Knows what steps can and should be taken in case of question regarding research issues and more seriously suspected breaches of scientific integrity, especially within the LUMC.

English workshops will provide special emphasis on the impact of cultural differences on concepts of scientific integrity.
