Time management: taking control of and optimising your time and life

In this course you will learn how to manage your time and organise your work more efficiently to increase your productivity and move through the PhD track more smoothly. This will enhance your focus and reduce time-related stress in your life.

Preparation for the start of the first session. The peer-to-peer coaching is interspersed with explanations about theories and models. You will also receive after the first course day a practical e-book containing theory, inspiring articles, and practical (digital) tools and tips which are easy to apply, but which you often do not think about in daily practice

Do you wonder how you can better manage your time to increase your productivity? Do you sometimes find it difficult to prioritise your work or do you have difficulties sticking to your schedule? This course will highlight patterns of behaviour and distractions that keep you from sticking to your schedule. This course will provide practical tips to manage your PhD project more effectively and efficiently, and to keep you from procrastinating. In doing so, you will start to experience more clarity, more focus, and a better work-life balance.

PhD candidates (Leiden University and LUMC) in the first, or second year of their doctoral research: €520

Topics covered

In this course you will examine your own approach to time management. You will learn about causes of inefficiency and you will work on a more effective approach. We will look at limiting factors: why do intentions not have the desired effect?

What you'll learn

By looking, thinking and acting differently (than before) in your work context, you ensure that you will:

  •  carry out your PhD project more efficiently and effectively,
  •  prioritise your tasks, achieve more goals and experience more satisfaction,
  •  stop procrastinating
  •  experience a better balance between work and private life,
  •  experience control and tranquillity,
  •  manage the growing workload,
  •  deal with ad hoc matters, while not losing track of your long term goals.

By reflecting on thinking, your way of acting, and external factors related to your (lack of) time and self-management, it will become clear what you can solve, tackle or change to achieve personal goals. More focus, clear priorities, awareness, and more organisation of your work will be the result. In short: it will result in doing your PhD project in a way that suits you. The training will focus on your personal needs and situation.

Format

The training consists of three peer group coaching meetings to which the daily work situation and learning needs of you and other participants are central. Peer group coaching is a problem-solving technique that allows you to look at your problem, behaviour or situation together with your peers. This helps you better understand your own situation and offers new ideas to change or improve the situation.

Workload

This course will take place over three 3,5-hour sessions.  The total workload for this course amounts to 15 hours including attendance and preparation.
