Course content

A compelling introduction and a well-structured literature review are fundamental to high-quality academic research. In this module, participants learn how to demonstrate the relevance of their research, position their research question within the existing literature, and write an analytical literature review.

The course covers:

• the purpose and structure of an effective introduction
• formulating a research problem
• structuring an introduction using the CARS model
• common pitfalls and best practices
• the aims and functions of a literature review
• systematically searching for, selecting, and analysing scientific literature
• positioning one's own research within the broader scholarly debate

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• recognise and apply the characteristics of an effective academic introduction
• formulate and clearly position a research problem
• use the CARS model to structure an introduction logically
• explain the purpose and function of a literature review
• prepare a systematic literature search strategy
• critically analyse and synthesise scientific literature
• clearly articulate the contribution of their own research to the academic debate

Course structure

The course consists of an online preparation (homework) and an interactive face-to-face session. The online module includes short video lectures, practical examples, exercises, and additional reading materials. Participants complete the online components independently at their own pace. During the face-to-face session, the focus is on discussing ideas, exchanging experiences, and applying the concepts covered in the online module.
Completing the online preparation is mandatory, the homework must be submitted at least one week before the start date.

Course duration

Approximately 18 hours of self-study and one 8-hour face-to-face session.
