Safety abroad
Students and staff from Leiden University must be able to carry out their studies, internships and research abroad safely. Please therefore take the travel advice issued by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs into account.
Travel Restrictions
The Ministry’s travel advice for other countries is assigned a colour code:
| Green | No risk |
| Yellow | Some risk, exercise caution |
| Orange | Travel only if necessary |
| Red | High risk, do not travel |
If a particular area abroad has an orange or red travel advisory, students are not permitted to travel there. This also applies if the area’s advisory level is likely to change to orange or red.
Leiden University does not enter into agreements with institutions in countries with an orange or red travel advisory. If the travel advisory for a destination with which the university already has an agreement changes, the International Relations Office, in consultation with Security Affairs, will decide whether students may travel to that destination.
Students
In very exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed to travel to areas with an orange travel advisory. This may apply, for example, to a master’s student who wishes to complete a compulsory internship or fieldwork in their home country, or to a student who is already in their home country for a study-related activity when the advisory level changes to orange.
In such cases, students must always obtain permission from Leiden University’s International Incident Team (IIT).
