This presentation presents some of the early findings from the Survey and Landscape Archaeology on Montserrat (SLAM) project’s NEH-funded research program (2015-19), which is at its halfway point. This project explores the intricacies of Caribbean colonization on Montserrat during what is framed as a “long contact period”, a time of major social and environmental change about which little is known archaeologically or historically on the island. Examples from historic and late prehistoric sites, and issues concerning contemporary cultural heritage, will be discussed.
