ScientistWanted: learn how to present your research in a video
- Wednesday 10 April 2019 - Saturday 1 June 2019
Wanted: enthusiastic young scientists who want to share their research with the public
At Leiden University we think it is good for young researchers to tell people about their research. Therefore we offer a training programme that helps you explain your research to the public and gives you a platform to get your message out to the world. The programme is offered in collaboration with ScientistWanted.
In this training programme, you will learn how to develop a clear and effective research message for your target audience. You will then make a video profile that tells the outside world what you and your research have to offer. This will be placed on the ScientistWanted platform and shared through the University’s channels. Your video profile is a showcase for you and your research: good visibility is the first step to more opportunities as a speaker or writer. You will also meet other researchers with the same passion for science communication, and you will become a member of the ScientistWanted community.
Please note: the training will be in English, which means your video will also be in English.
The training takes seven weeks. There are four meetings, in between which you will work on your pitch – following weekly instructions online. In the first meeting, you will learn how to make a pitch and how to come up with a concrete research message. In the two weeks that follow, you will work independently on turning your pitch into a script.
In the second meeting, you will be given feedback on your script and video-making tips by the University’s professional filmmaker. In the four weeks until the next meeting, you will follow the filmmaker’s instructions to produce a rough version of a film.
In the third meeting, you will be given feedback on your film. You will then have another two weeks to make any last changes to the video before the final meeting when we show all the videos to the public.
Alongside the four sessions, you will need 20 to 30 hours to make your video. Make sure that your supervisor agrees to you following this programme. Unfortunately, you can’t earn credits for this training at present.
