On Saturday 25 May, Museon and Leiden University are hosting a festival of culture and history: Caribbean Ties. This will be an informal afternoon about the Caribbean and its past and present inhabitants with a varied programme including talks, workshops, speed dating with Caribbean archaeologists, Caribbean food and products, music and a talk show.

The Caribbean Ties exhibition will also be opened during the festival. Caribbean Ties is an exhibition about the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and their effect on societies today, in both the Caribbean and the Netherlands. The exhibition is based on wide-ranging, ongoing archaeological research (ERC-NEXUS1492) by Leiden University. What makes this exhibition special is that it is running at 11 locations in the Caribbean simultaneously. Museon is the only European location at which the exhibition can be seen.

There will be two plenary sessions at the festival. Space is limited, so please register in advance for these sessions. The rest of the festival is open to all.

  • 13:30 – 14:30            Short talks + live performances (some in English)
  • 16:30 – 17:30            Talkshow ‘What does it mean to be Caribbean?’ (in Dutch)
