From small steps to big changes: enhancing the learning experience together

How can we work together to bring about innovation in teaching and learning? What steps should we take? How do we ensure that students actively participate in the learning process? The second Leiden University Education Festival on Thursday 9 May 2019 will bring together people with knowledge and experience of designing and engaging in activating teaching and learning. Particular attention will be paid to collaboration between lecturers and students. 

The festival will comprise a mixture of plenary sessions and workshops. Gain inspiration and share tips from your own teaching and learning practice. The main language of the programme is English.

Keynote Ian Cook (University of Exeter) & Zahra Ali (former student)

Who makes our stuff? With what pay and conditions? With what opportunities to improve them? In this talk, Ian and Zahra will discuss ways in which they addressed these questions as CEO and intern, lecturer and student, MOOC lead and mentor, in the 'follow the things' project at Exeter University in 2017-2018.

Ian runs the spoof online store - followthethings.com - which has, so far, researched and showcased the making, discussion and impacts of over 80 documentaries, artworks, activist stunts and other forms of cultural activism intended to encourage consumers to appreciate who makes their things. This online store is also the textbook for an undergraduate module called Geographies of Material Culture, where groups of students are given new examples to research for publication on the website, and are tasked with researching and experimenting with new examples of 'who made my stuff?' commodity activism.

In 2017 and 2018, this hybrid approach to research and pedagogy was condensed into a 3 week long MOOC for the Fashion Revolution, focusing on the movement's leading question - Who Made My Clothes? - and organised according to its mantra -  'Be Curious. Find Out. Do Something.' In a Higher Education system which too often positions academics and producers and students as consumers, in this talk we will outline what can happen when everyone is a researcher, finding things out with each other and for themselves, in ways that matter to them personally, inside and outside the classroom.

Nieuwscheckers: 10 jaar onderwijs, outreach en onderzoek
(in Dutch) (45 min)
Sinds 2009 controleren Leidse studenten journalistiek de feiten in het nieuws. Hun factchecks publiceren ze op nieuwscheckers.nl. Wat begon als een studieopdracht voor een minorvak groeide uit tot een project met internationale uitstraling. Begeleiders Dr. Peter Burger en Dr. Alexander Pleijter vertellen over de successen en obstakels en demonstreren hoe je mensen kunt leren om zelf het nieuws te checken. Zij worden vergezeld door hun student-assistente Fiorella Opromolla die over het project zal vertellen vanuit haar perspectief als student.

Transformative learning in prison 
(45 min)
In this workshop, Dr Joni Reef (LAW) will explain the concept of transformative learning. An important aspect is for individuals to understand a concept from an alternative point of view, such as that of another individual. By taking in another perspective, individuals change their reference view, reflect on their existing assumptions and beliefs, and develop new ways of defining their current 'real world'. The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program is an educational program with a transformative approach tailored to facilitate dialogue across difference. Inside-Out courses bring traditional college students and incarcerated students together in prisons for semester-long learning. These courses instigate enthusiasm for learning and challenge students to consider what good citizenship requires.

Prof. Fred Janssen (ICLON) will demonstrate how a practical toolbox enables you to convert your current way(s) of teaching into multiple forms of inquiry-based teaching.

Empathetic Education Through Simulation
(20 min)
Dr. Caroline Archambault (LUC) will provide a brief introduction to her teaching/research program Human Security: Poverty in The Hague and highlighting the role of simulations in this project. She will provide an excerpt of a simulation created by students which aims to teach about the challenges people struggling with drug addiction face in the workplace. She will also share some of the challenges we face in using simulation as a pedagogical tool. And finally she will be opening up the floor for questions and feedback.

Plenary session: ‘Meeting the demands of interdisciplinary education’

There is a growing trend towards integrated courses covering many disciplines. As part of the first year, students at Leiden University College take a course called ‘Global Challenges: Sustainability’. This course is incredibly broad, covering everything from ecotoxicology to common pool resources. Students come from mixed backgrounds, from the humanities to the sciences so we are unable to assume a particular foundation of knowledge. We developed a course to address this holistically, and as a result developed a textbook around the theme of food sustainability so that we could free up space in class for more activities. In this plenary we will talk about the trials and tribulations of making this textbook: how we came up with it, what we learned for working together, and the difference it has made to the course.

The use of theatre as a teaching and assessment tool 
(45 min)
In this workshop Dr. Anar Ahmadov (LUC) presents an interactive theatre tool that aims to facilitate a nuanced, holistic exploration of different topics in social sciences. Its approach builds on insights drawn from the work of four playwrights who provide fascinating, in-depth examinations of social and political topics: Henrik Ibsen, George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht, and Augusto Boal. Two features that distinguish the method I present here from other techniques are student ownership and interaction with the audience. This method offers a promising and flexible tool that can help synthesise ideas from thriving but often ingrown areas of social science research, contextualise them, and examine their practical relevance. The workshop will also provide means of assessing student work, including a peer review system.

Studying Mobile

A small team of your colleagues recently obtained funding to implement and experiment with a new platform that helps improve students' retention of knowledge obtained in introductory courses. The platform is developed for mobile phone use. In this workshop, Dr. Ludo Juurlink (Science) will teach you about the intent of the project, that was awarded a Comenius Leadership Fellow grant. You are also challenged to think how it may be of use in your own teaching, as it will be freely available to you from 2019 onward.

Peer-feedback to practice recognizing structures
(20 min)
Trial lesson by Dr. Carolina Jost (LUMC)

Traditionally, the study of the microscopical structure of tissues has been an essential part of (bio) medical education. Formerly histology was taught using traditional microscopes, nowadays this education is increasingly offered virtually. Regardless of whether traditional or virtual microscopy is used, the learning objective remains the recognition of structures, even if these structures do not display the ideal - textbook-example- image. With the introduction of virtual microscopy, additional, more activating, online forms of education are being used, allowing students to practice recognizing structures.
In this lesson the participants can practice recognizing structures and get acquainted with the newly developed Peer-FeedBack  module in Blackboard.

White Walls: the Impact of the Physical Environment in Stories and in Care
(20 min)

Trial lesson by Dr. Pauline Slot (Honours Academy)

Patients receive care in functional environments: safe, technical, depersonalized. Characters in stories, on the other hand, are deliberately placed in settings that highlight their dilemma's and emotional state of mind. In this trial lesson we explore the features of treatments rooms, and compare this to the use of setting in a story. What feelings do different environments evoke? Participants will be invited to engage in a short observational exercise from the Honours Class Narrative Care
