AFTER THE BREAK

Carbon (C) – Graphene as the material of the future (this lecture will be held in English)

Dr. Grégory Schneider, assistant professor at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University

The second lecture of the evening will focus on the element Carbon (C). Carbon is found in many well-known forms, such as coal and graphite – found in pencils - but also in less-known forms such as graphene. The key difference between graphite and graphene is that the latter is only a single atom thick. This ultra-thin atomic layer of carbon atoms, arranged in a honeycomb-like crystalline latice, has fascinating properties. It is 200 stronger than steel, and excellent thermal and electrical conductor, flexible and paper-thin. During this lecture Grégory Schneider will talk about the unique chemistry of graphene and its exciting new applications.
