Field-walking survey has been the prospection method most widely employed by archaeologists throughout the Mediterranean basin to register data of archaeological sites. Scholars have accumulated an impressive quantity of legacy data from their past surveys, but these data are still trapped in locked databases. There is a concrete risk that these data will be lost due to improper curation and digital obsolescence. To prevent this from happening, I propose to develop a collaborative open-data system for digital crowdsourcing: through the active contribution of researchers and citizen scientists, legacy survey data can be rescued and made openly and freely accessible online.
