LTA Lunch Lecture
As Teaching Fellow Ethan Mark developed the project “Crossfire of Empires: Global Histories of WWII.” This project aims to learn students cutting edge history enabling them to review world war II from a largely different perspective on the Other as well as on themselves. It showcases how we can teach complex topics to a diverse group of students with very different disciplinary and regional background.
Ethan will discuss this development of his project, the textbook and the website (under construction). Both good practices, inspiring activities, pitfalls and lessons learned will be touched upon.
The project resulted in a textbook, written with scholars from different universities and different backgrounds. The book assembles the building blocks of an accessible global narrative of the war that includes Europe and the United States while challenging the conventional impulse to narratively center them. An associated website is under construction.
Most appealing to Ethan is the notion of inspiring student passion for knowledge, learning, and critical thinking by using teaching as an opportunity to expose them to our own passion for what we do, where it comes from, and most importantly why it matters: how we envision our research and the stories we tell as a way of changing understandings of the world for the better.
This Lunch Lecture is initiated by the Leiden Teachers' Academy (LTA) and aims for teaching staff who want to improve their teaching. Lunch is available. Registration (till January 8 2020) is needed for catering purposes.
