Swapping stories and ideas
Suddenly having to transfer all your classes to an online environment. It is a huge challenge that takes a lot of effort. But, it also triggers a lot of inventiveness and creativity. Good to take a break and swap stories and ideas with colleagues from different programmes and departments in the Faculty of Science. These sessions are meant for sharing knowledge and talking amongst colleagues about what works and what doesn't, helping you in discovering your own best way to teach and supervise online.
Join us daily between 11:00 and 11:30!
So, get yourself a nice cup of coffee, find a relaxed spot to sit and join us in our Virtual Coffee Room hosted by Pedro Russo, every day at 11:00. You can log onto Kaltura by simply filling in your name and e-mail address.
To the Coffee RoomEvery day a different topic and guest speaker
Every day, we will have a different 'Coffee guest' who will share his or her story or experience with online education during the coffee break. Afterwards, we will have a Q&A and/or a discussion. The stories shared by our Coffee guests will be recorded and made available. View the recordings archive for topics you might have missed.

Peter Grünwald, professor of Statistical learning, showed us how great the uncertainties are in estimating the future number of Corona patients.
Marcel Schaaf let his students make video presentations in Kaltura, had a computer practical in a live room and held an exam.
Michiel made his lecture videos in YouTube style, and also made an online version of the disection practical.
Michiel also sang a song at the end of the coffee break.
Roeland Merks held retake exams for his Biology and Mathematics students.
Tom Savenije told about the exam he held for his MST students in Brightspace and how he conducted his oral exams online.

Roeland van der Rijst (ICLON) developed an interactive video for his course with 200 students. With his colleagues, he has also been working on a way to stimulate and monitor students collaborating in projects.

Topic: Dealing with practicals
Practicals are an essential part of our study programmes, but most of them can't be executed from home. Solutions are needed to keep students from getting behind on their schedules. One of them is the reintroduction of the 'zachte knip'.
De Graauw is developing a new platform for lecturers that can facilitate collaboration, presenting, written assignments, feedback, research and more. She is already using it for her 3rd year BSc students' research assignments in combination with Labster resulting in better performance from the students with respect to previous years.
Cucurachi set up a course engaging his MSc students for several hours. In addition to the regular course content, he offered meditation, a shared music playlist and the possibility to learn skills during the breaks.
Hermans made a video lecture in which students are asked to really participate. She is also working on a programming language that teaches children how to program.
As of tradition Tudorache takes his students on a Field Trip to the Boerhaave Museum. This year however the museum was closed. So Tudorache took his students on a Virtual Field Trip to the Smithsonian (Washington, DC).
Since all student recruiting activities on site are cancelled, Communications & Marketing, the study programmes and the student ambassadors are working hard to give secondary school pupils enough information about what it is like to study in Leiden. LST is one of the study programmes that is using the online Proefstuderen tool to give prospective students a taste of what LST in Leiden and Delft is all about.
Now the labs are largely inaccessible, many people will revert to doing literature search for proposals, new research ideas or as alternative exercise for students. Subject librarian Rutger de Jong will introduce the possibilites for remote working, additional resources during the crisis and efficient methods of literature research.
For the course Academische Vorming and the workshop Writing an Applications letter, Hoebe had to change to a remote version of her lecture. Together with Huijskens of the Science Career Service, she created a convincing alternative. And they are happy to share this with us.
Willemse works at the Institute of Biology and advises colleagues on how to make Online Exams. He already has a lot of experiences with different groups and teachers and can share some best practices with us, and can also give tips on what not to do when starting to prepare an Online Exam.
Boomgaard is a Study Adviser at the CML department of our faculty. She will talk to us about the impact of the measures the University had to take in relation to Covid-19.
De Graauw is using Labbuddy: a platform guiding students through their practicals, leading to time in the lab spent more efficiently and also to better learning results from students. Now, she is using it as a replacement for practicals.

For his course BODier Tudorache made a 'theoretical practical', giving student groups of 4 a case to work on. He flips the classroom by letting each group discuss their case with their peers. For the examination he made individual exams.
