Walking on Thin Ice: The Biography of Nadi, and the Tension between Buddhism and the State in Early Tang
- Wednesday 7 October 2020
- China Seminar
- on Microsoft Teams
Shifting the focus from authenticity to contextuality, I propose to approach texts of dubious origin such as the “Biography of Nadi” in Xu gaoseng zhuan (Supplementary Biographies of Eminent Monks) as lived objects that have collaborated with humans to constitute a shared space of meaning in a community. By positioning this biography in the historical context of early Tang dynasty, I explore how it expresses the ways in which factional politics inside the royal court were wedded with doctrinal competition inside the monastery. As implied by this controversial text, all the clerics were walking on thin ice when interacting with their patrons from the ruling class.
