Abstract
Despite analyses on the causes and consequences of external voting, existing literature overlooks the connection between party competition with electoral rules and geographic location. In this seminar, I discuss the determinants why political parties campaign abroad, when a country’s electoral design allows selective competition. Using a longitudinal dataset of legislative elections (1976–2018) in which non-resident citizens from Latin American and Southern European countries can partake, I describe the incentives and constraints of party presence abroad, evaluating hypotheses on transnational party competition. Since this set of countries have within- and cross-country variation in terms of electoral rules and external voting rights, I examine the strategic entry of parties in overseas districts, incorporating a set of institutional, ideological and contextual variables into studying transnational party competition. I find that emigrant seats and pro-emigrant party position, along with political parties with previous experience in overseas districts, are positively correlated with party presence abroad.
