How Islamists Navigate a Secular World [CANCELLED]

Why is it that some Islamist groups survive and other perish in world politics? All Islamists have to operate in a hostile environment which is dominated by secular norms and practices. In addition to coping with the stigma attached to their religious identity, many Islamist groups have to also face the consequences of being labeled as ‘terrorist’ groups. Such stigmatization can justify manifold coercive measures, including the use of violence to eradicate them. Unsurprisingly, some groups succumb to this pressure, but others withstand it, which makes them interesting case studies. This lecture explores such groups to reveal how they manage to resist stigma and coercion in order to ensure their viability and pursue their goals. It suggests that these groups owe their existence to the skillful mobilization of ideational and material resources available within the international society which excludes them.
About Marina Calculli
Marina Calculli is a Lecturer in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies at Leiden University. Her research addresses questions on the interaction between states and nonstate armed groups, with an empirical focus on the Middle East. She is the author of a monograph titled The Politics of Dissimulation: How Hezbollah Resists against the World (published in Italian in 2018 and forthcoming in English).
