The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs will host the book reading 'Vreemde eenden' by Martine Beijerman on Wednesday 9 June.

During the summer of 2020 fear, anger and indignation flared up in the US after the murder of George Floyd, yet another incident of police brutality. Worldwide, people went to the streets to demonstrate: Black Lives Matter. Racism is a Pandemic Too. Equality for All. These protests exposed the painful truth about us human beings. We live in a democracy with freedom and equality as the most important values. Yet the reality of democracy is more complex: racism, violence against women, anti-Semitism and homophobia are in many democratic societies still painfully present. Why do people - in practically every society - exclude certain groups? Why do we systematically fall short in the application of our own democratic ideals?
Vreemde eenden
Martine Beijerman tries to unravel in Vreemde eenden how exclusion comes about, who benefits from it, what role the (social) media play, and who are fighting exclusion. She interviews top scientists from various disciplines and collects insights from books, documentaries and articles. How do group dynamics work and what role do our biological and psychological processes play in this? Why do we often prefer to avoid the conversation on exclusion? And above all: how can we prevent exclusion? Vreemde eenden is a confronting and hopeful book that invites us to collectively reflect on our values, perspectives and on the choices we make.

As long as we recognize exclusion, explore our own role in exclusion, and take concrete actions to counteract inequality and oppression, we can move forward on the path that lies ahead of us: a society in which we do not waste our energy on hatred, resentment and polarization, but in which we shape our shared future and indivisible freedom with critical love."
