Open access data and software are rapidly creating new possibilities for archaeological research. This talk presents a research using Viewshed Analysis and LiDAR visualizations to explore the relatively poorly understood Nijmegen moraine in the Roman era. The moraine lies in between the legionary fortresses of Nijmegen and Xanten and appears to be an ideal location for a watchtower used in a signaling chain along the Limes. Traditional archaeological research has not found these, but digital research techniques can point us in the right direction, to predict and locate new sites.
