Michael Keating is Professor of Politics at the University of Aberdeen. Between 2013 and 2020 he was also Director of Scottish Centre on Constitutional Change, which was founded in the run-up of the Scottish Independence Referendum of 214. He is an expert on both the politics of the European Union and Scottish nationalism and is the author of numerous books, among which Rescaling the European State (Oxford 2013), The Independence of Scotland (Oxford 2009) and most recently State and Nation in the United Kingdom.
Michael Keating will present some of the views from his recent book State and Nation in the United Kingdom: The Fractured Union (Oxford UP 2021) on the tensions between majority and minority nationalisms as they play out in various countries nowadays, focusing in particular on the implications of Brexit. He argues that the tensions between England and the other members of the Union have increased remarkably since the Brexit referendum of 2015, especially because the European Union served as an important external support system for the devolution of power to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
