September 6, the annual Van de Waal Lecture takes place, to mark the opening of the academic year of the department of Art History. The lecture will be available via livestream. The lecture takes place with the generous support of the RKD.
This year's speaker is Prof.dr. Reinier Baarsen, Professor by special appointment History of the Decorative Arts for 1800, and senior curator of furniture at Rijksmuseum.
About the lecture
In recent years a collection of European design drawings for the decorative arts from 1500 to 1900 has been formed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, as a complement to the museum’s rich holdings of decorative arts from that era. The aim is to clarify the role drawings have played in the process of making, selling and marketing works of the decorative arts. This addresses the notion of ‘design’ in its repercussions for the production of works of art. An exhibition of about 200 drawings from this collection will be held at the Design Museum in Den Bosch, opening in November 2022.
All over the world, ‘design museums’ concentrate on the period from about 1880: this reflects a narrow interpretation of the word design. By hosting the exhibition from the Rijksmuseum, the Design Museum in Den Bosch contributes to the debate on what constitutes design.
