China and global climate change: roadmap and emission reduction in the cooling sector

China is the world’s second largest economy yet biggest Greenhouse gas emitter, accounting for 28% of global GHG emission. Since 2014, China has made international commitment to cap carbon emissions by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. What do China’s commitments mean to global efforts to curb climate change? How does its climate foreign policy interact with domestic policy? How would China’s domestic policies carry out its international ambition, and how its low-carbon transition influences the economy of other countries?

Shiming Yang will introduce China’s international commitment and domestic climate policies. She will then examine a small yet important sector –the cooling sector. As Global Warming continues, the demand for cooling systems increases, but the main refrigerants used worldwide, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are potent GHGs. Her research focuses on how China is phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and how this interacts with the international cooling market. She will provide an insight in China’s positions into the eight years of multilateral negotiations towards HFC phase-down, as well as China’s industrial response and domestic policy relating to this transition.

Liveable communities – Liveable Planet

The Liveable Planet programme is one of the eight interdisciplinary programmes that were launched at Leiden University in 2020

Leiden’s Liveable Planet programme aims to combine scientific, policy, socio-cultural and historical/archaeological research at Leiden University into coherent research with which we can tackle the major challenges of a transition to a habitable planet with ecological sustainability. The programme will  serve as a hub for the wide range of relevant research carried out within Leiden University and welcomes interaction with colleagues interested in contributing to the initiative within as well as outside of Leiden University.
