Abstract
It is often forgotten that the world remained largely agricultural during the Second World War. Nothing brings this out as clearly as the famines it helped trigger in Asia as well as Europe. In this presentation, I pay attention to scorched earth policies and wartime mobilizations to investigate the famines that occurred in Henan in China, Java in Indonesia, and Tonkin and north Annam in Vietnam. I will also examine the political consequences each of these famines entailed.
