As part of prof. dr. Cátia Antunes’ VICI project ‘Exploiting the Empires of Others: Dutch Investment in Foreign Colonial Resources, 1570-1800’, this PhD project investigates how and why early modern Dutch firms participated in exploiting the Spanish Atlantic. The case study of the Coymans family, who in 1685 obtained the Asiento de Negros, shows what drove early modern Dutch firms to expand their business to the Spanish Atlantic. During this talk, the results of the first year of research are discussed.
