The EU External Action Service has suspended all activities related to the ASEM Day Celebration, including the Roundtable with the Asia Europe Meeting scheduled for Tuesday March 1st. These dark days are no time for celebration in Europe.
Jan Melissen (ISGA) will moderate a Roundtable Discussion on 'Food in Diplomacy' held by the Asia-Europe Meeting, in collaboration with UNESCO and The Hague Journal of Diplomacy.
The discussion will focus on the power of food at the highest and lower levels of international politics, intangible heritage and gastro-diplomacy in cultural relations between Asia and Europe.
Food and culinary heritage hold a unique place as historical, cultural, economic and social constructions. From working lunches to prestigious gala dinners, the table has often been integrated into an international diplomatic context to contribute to consensus and cross-cultural understanding. Traditional foodways and gastronomies involve practices that are transmitted within a community, and their safeguarding and valorization are of great significance, beyond national prestige. In this respect, alongside states and multilateral organizations, civil society actors, and chefs in particular, play an important role as gastro-ambassadors and bridge-builders.
